Are there areas in the workplace where continuous noise exposure levels exceed 85dBA?

Is there an ongoing preventive OSHA hearing conservation program to educate employees in: safe levels of noise, noise exposure; effects of noise on their health; and the use of OSHA personal protective equipment?      
Have work areas where noise levels make voice communication between employees difficult been identified and posted?      
Are noise exposure levels being measured using a sound level meter or an octave band analyzer and are records being kept according to OSHA noise standards?      
Have engineering controls been used to reduce excessive noise exposure levels?      
Where engineering controls are determined not feasible, are administrative controls (i.e. worker rotation) being used to minimize individual noise exposure?        
Is approved OSHA personal protective equipment (noise attenuating devices) available to every employee working in noisy areas?        

Have you tried isolating noisy machinery from the rest of your operation?


If you use ear protectors as OSHA personal protective equipment, are employees properly fitted and instructed in their use?

Are employees in high noise exposure areas given periodic audiometric testing to ensure that you have an effective OSHA hearing conservation system?      

This Noise Exposure checklist is NOT all-inclusive. You should add to it as necessary or skip parts that are not applicable to your company.  Carefully consider each item on OSHA hearing conservation, and refer to OSHA workplace safety laws for complete and specific guidelines that may apply to your work environment. This OSHA noise standard list is typical for general industry, not construction or maritime.
